Happy Wednesday, Future Party. We’ve reached a new milestone in e-commerce — a car has autonomously delivered itself to its owner. Tesla announced that one of its vehicles drove off the lot at its Texas Gigafactory and drove a half hour to its new owner’s residence. Very cool… but it couldn’t have picked up some dinner while it was at it? Missed opportunity.

Tech Giants Battle Over “The List”

Silicon Valley is abuzz about a list of the world’s best minds working on AI, compiled by Meta, as the tech giant pours massive amounts of money into luring them to its new superintelligence team.

The Big Picture: The list of people who are actually able to work on and advance cutting-edge AI models is quite small (about a few dozen), especially considering that, just a handful of years ago, academic research was the endgame for that type of education. But now that AI has become fully commercialized, tech giants see these technically brilliant minds as the talent that could bring untold riches.

Behind the Hires: If you’re on Meta’s list, expect there to be a lot of digits on your next salary offer… with some pay packages even reaching $100 million.

  • The talent on the list is, by and large, engineers and researchers in their 20s and 30s who hold PhDs from places like Stanford, UC Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, and MIT. They’re experts in calculus, linear algebra, and probability theory.

  • They’ve put in time at other AI giants like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic and are responsible for countless published research papers that other AI engineers cite.

  • Also, most of the talent on the list are familiar with one another, having attended the same school or lived together in the Bay Area, which allows them to compare notes about job offers. Some are so close that they’re negotiating employment as a group.

The Future: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been personally reaching out to people on the company’s internal list, inviting them to weekends at his compound in Tahoe to win them over. The new hires will work under new Meta Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang, who joined the company after Meta acquired his company, ScaleAI, for $14 billion.

Not to be outdone, the heads of all the other major AI companies are scheduling face time with the desired AI talent, offering massive pay bumps to keep them from defecting to Meta.

Prediction: For many AI researchers and engineers, the company that provides them with the most autonomy and computing power may get the upper hand, so expect Meta to announce a flurry of AI infrastructure investments as a means to pull ahead of the competition.

Millennials And Gen Zers Go On “Micro-Retirement”

Just need a little break

Gen Z is already feeling the work burnout and is now planning mini-retirements every year or so to recharge.

Why It Hits: Thanks to a challenging job market, depressed wages, and the threat of displacement by AI, workers are feeling the squeeze from all sides, leading to burnout. Taking periodic breaks from work tracks when Gen Z already puts a premium on mental health.

Behind the Sabbaticals: Graduating from college with the odds stacked against them, the youngest cohort is already feeling like they need a vacation.

  • Micro-retirements are brief breaks that last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, usually occurring every 12 to 18 months.

  • They’re typically unpaid, so it doesn’t dip into PTO, giving the time off a slightly different vibe than a typical vacation.

  • The time off is intended to recharge the batteries, similar to mental health days that some companies have begun to offer in recent years.

Last Stop: Despite the potential negative impact to career growth, a Side Hustles survey found that 13% of millennials and 9% of Gen Zers are planning a micro-retirement this year, while 75% of Americans believe that employers should offer micro-retirements (unpaid, obviously) as a job perk to keep employees refreshed. Sometimes, not losing your sanity is worth having a promotion delayed.

Prediction: Expect younger workers to start negotiating to add a micro-retirement schedule to their employment packages, which could institute a European-style holiday culture in the US.

70.9% of you voted No in yesterday’s poll: Do you follow any content that doesn’t show the creator’s identity?

“At least not that I’m aware of.”

“I tend not to ‘follow’ any content creators. Most of the UGC stuff I’ve seen is poorly, and obviously, AI-generated. The live-actor content is more self-aggrandizement than informative and useful.”

“My favorite YouTuber is someone whose face I’ve never seen. I connect with her somehow. Her name is deemd, and she has the coolest, calmest life to me.”
