Moana Money

Disney could find treasure with Moana 2, older people dominate fashion campaigns, and Conan gets an Oscar

Happy Monday, Future Party. Here’s something to blow your mind: Comic Sans is cool now. After being the butt of jokes for decades, the much maligned font is getting reappraised as it turns 30. Who knows, maybe we’ll start writing the whole newsletter in the font just to see how it feels…

Moana 2 Tests Streaming’s Cultural Power

Moana 2, set for release over the Thanksgiving weekend, has the potential to become Disney’s highest-grossing release of all time.

The Big Picture: While 2016’s Moana was a hit, it was nowhere near the runaway success of other Disney animated titles. But streaming (especially on Disney+) turned the movie into an enduring cultural juggernaut, showing the power of families watching it repeatedly with their kids during the pandemic.

Behind The Scenes: At one point, Moana 2 was set to be a streaming series until a last-minute suggestion by Disney film chief Alan Bergman changed its course, per Bloomberg.

  • Moana has been streamed for 80 billion minutes — the equivalent of watching the movie in its entirety 748 million times — ranking it as one of the top four most-watched films on any streaming service every year since its release.

  • Additionally, the soundtrack by Lin-Manuel Miranda has sold 5.6 million copies — more than Disney’s Encanto and Coco.

  • Ticketing service Fandango reported that first-day ticket presales for Moana 2 are already higher than that of Inside Out 2 — the highest-grossing movie of the year and the highest-grossing animated movie of all time ($1.7 billion at the box office).

  • Box office tracking indicates that Moana 2 could open to $135 million in just the US and Canada — much higher than the original’s $82 million.

Closing Credits: The first Moana made $643 million at the global box office and was nominated for two Academy Awards — good outcomes for Disney, but not ones that indicate its follow-up could be the biggest animated movie ever. AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron already thinks it could beat out the total gross of Inside Out 2. If the hype is to be believed, Moana 2 could be the first animated movie to break $2 billion at the box office — a feat only achieved by five other movies.

New Fashion Loves The Old Guard

Over the past couple of years, luxury fashion and streetwear brands have turned to older, legendary celebrities to don their new seasonal lines in marketing campaigns… and it’s paying off.

Why It Hits: Fashion is typically viewed as a young person’s industry — and the marketing is still directed at them — but the decision to put older faces front and center may demonstrate how the power to influence is being rewoven.

Between The Threads: “Okay, boomer” has a different ring to it when it comes to new fashion campaigns.

  • KITH is the leader with the strategy, tapping Brian Cox, Bryan Cranston, and Jerry Seinfeld over the past couple of years.

  • LOEWE enlisted Anthony Hopkins.

  • Yves Saint Laurent gave Al Pacino a starring role.

  • Ami went with Whoopi Goldberg.

  • CELINE put Bob Dylan on their roster.

Wrapping Up: Highsnobiety believes that labels have turned to the seasoned star power because their sophistication and world-weariness give the clothes a more authentic and mature vibe. And it clearly resonates with audiences — the KITH-Cranston Insta post scored 220,000 likes, while the Ami-Whoopi one generated 147,000 in just two days. Those are high numbers for those brands. If sales among older customers increase, you might start to see a lot more veteran models on next year’s runways.

56.3% of you voted No in Friday’s poll: Do you have a Spotify subscription?

“It’s too spotty.”

“It’s worth it if that’s your only music source, but we had Apple Music, SiriusXM, and Amazon music. I canceled them all! It’s like all subscription services today: we’re paying for redundancy of services we don’t use.”

“I have an LP record collection. Then, I upgraded and got a CD collection. That’s it. I’m keeping this collection, and I do have them on my iTunes, so I’m not a complete Boomer.”

“We’re an Apple Music household. But honestly, its user interface is terrible, and I secretly wish we would switch over to Spotify.”

“It’s my most-used streaming platform. Having a family plan keeps everyone happy.”
