Nate Bargatze Wants To Make The Whole Family Laugh With Nateland

In every format // GIF by Kate Walker

Nate Bargatze, currently the biggest touring comedian in the world, is expanding his brand of PG-rated comedy with the creation of a wide-ranging media company — Nateland Entertainment.

The Big Picture: While live touring and podcasts have been cash cows for comedians over the past decade, Hollywood has immensely underinvested in the genre during the same time, especially live-action, family-friendly comedy. With nearly no one operating in that space in film and TV, Nateland has the opportunity to own it completely.

Behind the Scenes: Bargatze wants to turn Nashville, Tennessee, into the new comedy capital of the world.

  • Nateland, which counts former KPMG partner Felix Verdigets as its CEO, will have its hands in touring, comedy specials, podcasts, movies, TV, digital content, and products and merchandise.

  • While Nateland has partnered with Sony on its first movie, The Breadwinner, and has others set up at studios, the company may finance its own slate of projects in the future.

  • It’ll also plot some ambitious experiences, including an upcoming Nateland voyage with Norwegian Cruise Line and plans for a full-fledged theme park in Tennessee.

  • Nateland also has a talent incubator to help support an upcoming generation of clean comedians — similar to how Judd Apatow has helped mint pretty much every comedy star of the past 25 years.

Last Laugh: While it’s a risky move for Bargatze to step back from his very lucrative touring schedule to build Nateland, there’s an incredible amount of goodwill already behind the venture. Blue-chip brand partners like Walmart and General Mills have flocked to take part in The Breadwinner, signaling that the comic could tap rich advertisers to fund his entertainment efforts (with producer and former Marvel exec Jeremy Latcham saying they received more incoming calls on this film than they did for the first Avengers movie).

Prediction: When Nateland one day looks for outside investors, expect getting a piece of that pie to be the hottest ticket in town.

Nike Prints Next-Generation Apparel

Ready for a record // Illustration by Kate Walker

Nike has developed a 3D-printed sports bra to help Olympian Faith Kipyegon become the first woman to run a mile in under four minutes.

Why It Hits: By now, it’s no secret that Nike has faced a sales slump in recent years, prompting a change of CEOs and refocusing on sports performance over athleisure. Popularizing 3D-printed apparel could be a game-changer for the brand.

Between the Stitches: On Thursday, Kipyegon will attempt to break the four-minute mile (she’s already the closest woman to do so at four minutes and seven seconds) wearing Nike’s new FlyWeb bra.

  • The FlyWeb is made of woven thermoplastic polyurethane that’s “a unitard adorned with strategically-placed plastic nodules to improve aerodynamics,” per Nike.

  • According to The Information, it resembles plastic mosquito netting somewhat.

  • If it helps Kipyegon break the running record, it could become the ultimate marketing tool to commercialize the product.

  • It would also open the door for Nike to create other products using 3D printing, which could have a range of performance applications.

  • It would also allow Nike to potentially move manufacturing to countries with lighter US tariffs (most products are made in China and Vietnam).

Last Lap: New CEO Elliott Hill says Nike had recently “lost our obsession with sport,” so he’s doubling down on cutting-edge, high-performance products — a category where few can compete with the brand and one that’s currently experiencing double-digit growth even as overall revenue falls. The last time Nike developed a product for an athlete to beat a world record (Eliud Kipchoge’s attempt to complete a marathon in under two hours), it led to the bestselling Zoom Vaporfly 4% and kicked off a “super shoes” arms race.

Prediction: If Nike can convince women to wear plastic 3D-printed sports bras (both for running and for, like, grocery shopping), then Nike could be at the forefront of an apparel manufacturing revolution that could lift its finances.

“Just like Vegas, the house always wins.”

“It’s capitalism, bro.”

“It’s a terrible job market for employees, especially young people just entering the workforce. There are very few entry and mid-level openings, regular rounds of layoffs, and an ongoing pullback from the flexibility and freedom of hybrid work to more rigid, cost-cutting corporate practices.”

“You can’t run a company without good employees. Therefore, the employee has more leverage than they think. If you want job security, and you don’t own the company, make yourself invaluable, so they depend on you.”
