The Super Bowl scores all-time viewership

The Future. This year’s Super Bowl was the most-watched game ever, thanks to a years-long Chiefs winning streak and the high-profile relationship between Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift. The game has somehow found a wider audience and become a bigger go-to celebrity destination, so expect networks to start marketing the Super Bowl drama off the field just as much as they do on it in an effort to recapture this year’s magic.

Last Sunday’s game beat more than a few records.

  • It had a record viewership of 123.4 million viewers on CBS, Nickelodeon, Univision, and digital platforms like NFL+ — 120 million were on CBS alone. That’s a 7% increase from last year’s record-breaking game.

  • That makes Super Bowl LVIII the second most-watched TV program ever, bested only by the Apollo 11 Moon landing in 1969.

  • Additionally, 200 million viewers tuned in for at least part of the game (like Usher’s halftime show) or the fourth quarter — a 10% increase from last year.

This year’s Super Bowl was always going to be huge considering the Kansas City Chiefs also won last year’s record-breaking game. But, of course, there was the TSwift quotient, which had already been juicing game ratings and making headlines all season long.

How much of an impact did she make? Insights firm Numerator found that 20% of Super Bowl viewers cheered on Chiefs because of her relationship with the tight end.

So, now we want to hear from you…

ChatGPT will now remember you

The Future. OpenAI is beta-testing a new “memory” feature that’ll allow ChatGPT to know its individual users better over time and provide smarter functionality. While the feature is a key tenant for making chatbots more impactful and efficient, everyday users may wait to see the real-world strength of its privacy protections before letting the chatbot into their lives.

ChatGPT is evolving into a brain.

  • Memory will allow ChatGPT to remember personal things about users the more they use the chatbot — including their boss’ name, what kind of food they like, and how they like their blogs edited.

  • So, users will no longer have to remind ChatGPT of their preferences or key facts every time they use it.

  • The feature works in two ways: users can either manually tell what details ChatGPT should remember, or ChatGPT will simply learn those details over time.

  • Custom chatbots available on the GPT Store will also have memory, so that each one is better suited to individual users.

Be warned: OpenAI said that ChatGPT’s memories will be one of the primary ways the company will train its system moving forward — so it’s essentially the tracking cookies of AI.

The effects of cookies are still a hot topic, so OpenAI is stressing that ChatGPT is programmed not to remember “sensitive information,” and users will be able to turn off ChatGPT’s memories, remove memories, and even use an incognito mode whenever they want.

Mantel opens a one-stop shop for collectibles

The Future. Launched yesterday in beta, Mantel is both a social media platform and an original content hub for collectibles of every kind. Considering the industry is supposed to balloon past $1 trillion by 2033, Mantel could transform into a key player for connecting amateur collectors with willing investors.

Hobby hub
Brent Montgomery’s Wheelhouse and Alexis Ohanian’s Seven Seven Six have started what’s possibly the ultimate hub for collectors.

  • On Mantel, collectors can build community with one another, talk with experts, and even watch or listen to content around their favorite collectibles.

  • It’ll initially focus on sports cards, trading cards, and memorabilia but will soon expand into comics, cars, watches, and everything else.

  • The company has already raised funding from investors like Steve Aoki’s Aoki Labs and Gary Vaynerchuck’s VaynerFund and has tapped Evan Parker, the former GM of The Athletic, as CEO.

As the era of broad social media evolves into an ecosystem of niche communities, it seems inevitable that one focused on collectibles (or alternative assets for the investing crowd) would get created. In the US alone, 72% of millennials and 76% of Gen Zers consider themselves collectors — the same generations that traded Pokémon cards on the playground for clout.

Now they’ll have a place to really show off that first edition Charizard.
